Hosting a party should be enjoyable, not stressful. Yet when your guest list includes both vegans and non-vegans, it can feel a little tricky figuring out what to serve. You might wonder, What will please everyone? Will my family expect turkey? Will my vegan guests have enough to eat?
I've been vegan for a long time and have hosted nearly every type of gathering. From casual barbecues, holiday dinners, even small weddings. I've seen how food traditions, expectations, and personal choices can sometimes collide.

That's what inspired me to write my cookbook, How to Host Plant-Based Parties Everyone Will Love. It's filled with recipes, tips, and advice I've learned over the years for entertaining everyone-vegans and non-vegans alike-with ease and joy.
If you've ever felt nervous about feeding a mixed crowd, I promise: it's easier than you think. Let's talk about it.

Party planning basics
The secret to a stress-free party? Planning ahead. In my book, I walk you through the simple steps that make entertaining easy and enjoyable - yes, even with mixed guests at the table.

Whether you're hosting a cozy fondue party or a festive potluck, a little creativity goes a long way. I've learned that themes-like Mediterranean or Mexican-make planning easier and menus more inclusive.
Why hosting can feel overwhelming
Even under the best of circumstances, holidays and special occasions can be challenging. Often one person is expected to host because they have the largest home, are centrally located, or have a reputation as "the best cook." With that comes high expectations, especially at Thanksgiving or Christmas, when family members expect the same dishes prepared the same way Grandma made them.

Those traditions can be comforting, but they can also be hard to uphold, particularly when you've chosen to live vegan. For many people, changing a familiar menu feels like losing a piece of family history. The aromas and flavors are tied to childhood memories and cozy moments around the table.
The good news is, you can easily adapt many family recipes simply by replacing animal-derived products with plant-based ingredients. That's what I did with my Swedish great grandmother's heirloom snowball cookies. They taste exactly like hers!
Keeping the peace at Thanksgiving

One Thanksgiving, my cousin announced that she couldn't possibly enjoy the holiday without a turkey leg on her plate. I gently explained that we were preparing a beautiful feast with all the familiar dishes-stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, yams, pie-but made entirely plant-based. She could see I was serious about keeping animals off the dinner table, so she set aside her plan and joined us.

She filled her plate, enjoyed every bite, and by the end of the meal admitted she hadn't missed the turkey at all. In fact, she absolutely loved everything we served. That moment made the holiday feel even more special, and reminded me that keeping the peace doesn't mean compromising your values; it means sharing them with love and good food.
The joy of plant-based potlucks

Over the years, many of my non-vegan friends have discovered how easy and fun it is to host plant-based potluck parties. Everyone brings a dish, and no one feels left out. We've had Mediterranean, Mexican, Italian, and brunch-themed get-togethers, and they've become some of our most memorable meals.
More than a few of my friends have told me that after sharing these dishes, they've started incorporating more plant-based foods into their own lives. That's what I love most about food-it has a way of bringing people together and changing hearts in the gentlest way.

Create memorable moments
The best celebrations are neither the fanciest or most expensive. They are the ones that have been thoughtfully planned to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere filled with good food, good company, and good energy.

A few summers ago, we hosted a small, relaxed California coastal themed wedding reception for a young couple, in our backyard.
The entire menu was plant-based and catered by local restaurants. We kept it simple by using folding tables and chairs, outdoor canopies, and budget-friendly decor & tableware. The food was beautiful and absolutely delicious. Just look at those gorgeous plant-based desserts! Everyone loved it - vegan & non-vegans alike.

The mother of the bride did an amazing job planning this very special day for her daughter and new husband. It was truly one of the loveliest and most heartfelt wedding receptions I've attended and one that I will never forget.
Plant-based parties are for everyone
Whether it's a small family dinner or a large catered event, every gathering benefits from having vegan options. Not everyone eats meat or dairy, but anyone can enjoy plant-based food. I've attended countless events-from fundraisers to class reunions-where the menu offered shrimp, chicken, and beef but nothing plant-based. It's always disappointing, because a single vegan entrée or hearty side dish would make the meal more inclusive for everyone.

Plant-based dishes aren't just "substitutes." They're colorful, flavorful, and satisfying for any guest. Including them should be the standard, not the exception. (In my cookbook, I share how to plan menus that please mixed crowds while keeping the food simple, abundant, and stress-free.)
Food for thought
When I stopped consuming animals, I knew that if I wanted to maintain a social life, I had to cook-and I had to learn how to recreate the dishes I loved. Over time, I realized that vegan cooking isn't about sacrifice or deprivation. It's about discovery.
The foods I make today still carry the same flavors and memories, only now they align with my values. That's the message behind How to Host Plant-Based Parties Everyone Will Love: you can celebrate abundance, compassion, and community all at once.
