    🍓Why I like this recipe

    • It's so simple - just 3 ingredients!
    • Perfect as a light dessert or snack
    • It's pretty!
    • Who doesn't enjoy a billowy cloud-like treat?
    • Takes only a few minutes to make
    • Kids love it
    • Immediate gratification for those of us who hate to wait!

I admit, I'm a bit impatient by nature, so I just love it when I can whip together a tasty recipe that requires few ingredients and not a lot of time. I'm almost embarrassed about how ridiculously easy this vegan berry mousse recipe is, but that's what makes it so great.

    What inspired this recipe?

Years ago, I ran across a recipe for a no-bake frozen Cool Whip yogurt pie. Basically, it consisted of a graham cracker pie crust mounded with a filling made of Cool Whip (which is not vegan, as it contains milk products) mixed with any variety of fruit yogurt. The whole thing took minutes to throw together and then a couple hours in the freezer. This is a vegan version of that recipe, without the pie crust. However, if you want to make it as a pie, here is how we make a simply delicious vegan graham cracker crust (below).

You might be wondering, what is mousse?

Mousse is a culinary creation that gets its billowy texture from incorporating air bubbles. Depending on how it's made, it can be either light and fluffy or thick and creamy. Mousse can be sweet or savory, catering to a wide range of tastes. According to an article in Britannica.com, mousse originated in the 18th century in France, where the word mousse translates as "foam," describing the airy texture.

It's important to note, traditional mousse desserts are not vegan, as they are often made with dairy cream and egg whites. Some mousse recipes are baked. This vegan version is a quick & easy no-fuss, no-bake, dairy-free, eggless spin on a "mousse-like" dessert.

    🍓 Ingredient Notes

Ingredients to make easy vegan berry mousse including: fresh berries, vegan berry yogurt, non-dairy whipped topping, and a sprig of mint.

See the printable recipe card below for quantities & details.

Vegan yogurt - strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, boysenberry, mixed berries

Non-dairy whipped topping - thawed (I used So Delicious CocoWhip)

    Fresh berries (for garnish)

    Add-ons (optional)

A few springs of fresh mint

    Edible flowers

Shaved white or dark chocolate (vegan)

Tea cookies or mini vegan Palmier cookies

    Variations

This recipe can be prepared with other varieties of yogurt, including peach, lemon, lime, etc. You can use this easy vegan berry mousse recipe as a jumping off point for other fluffy vegan mousse-like desserts, such as:

Piña Colada Mousse - Create a festive tropical cloud-like treat by combining whipped coconut non-dairy topping with pineapple yogurt or vanilla yogurt mixed with drained crushed pineapple and a very small amount of rum or rum extract. Add a dollop of additional whipped topping sprinkled with lightly toasted flaked coconut, garnished with a fresh strawberry, and a paper umbrella. Make it a pie with a vegan graham cracker crust!

Easy Chocolate Mousse - Stir melted chocolate into vegan cream cheese, powdered sugar, and whipped topping. Perfect for creating the most luscious vegan chocolate dream pie.

    🍓 Instructions

    1. Place frozen whipped topping in the refrigerator until it is slightly softened.
A mixing bowl with non-dairy whipped topping next to bowls with fresh berries.

    2. Spoon softened whipped topping into a medium size mixing bowl.

    3. Add berry yogurt.

    4. Gently fold in yogurt without over-stirring. Cover bowl and freeze or serve immediately before whipped topping over-softens.

    5. When ready to serve, spoon berry mousse into small bowls. Garnish with fresh berries and mint leaves.

TIP: This recipe is best served immediately, before the whipped topping is overly softened. If you want to prepare it in advance, place the mousse into the freezer. Thaw the mousse in the refrigerator 2-3 hours before serving.

    🍓 Serving Suggestions

As with a lot of things in life, less is more, particularly when plating this mousse. I like to use petite bowls, stemware, or short barware. A berry or two, a sprig of fresh mint or an edible flower and a small cookie (like the heart-shaped palmiers below) are just enough garnish to create an eye-catching and mouth-watering presentation. I love how it looks served in small heart shaped bowls, perfect for Valentine's Day.

How to make coconut whipped topping

If you can't find a vegan/non-dairy whipped topping at the grocery store, you can make your own using coconut milk. Here is how I do it:

    INGREDIENTS

14 oz coconut milk (one can) refrigerated for at least 8 hours prior to using.

¼ cup powdered sugar Add more to taste if needed.

    ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

    INSTRUCTIONS

    • Open can of chilled coconut milk and scoop out hardened coconut cream (not the liquid milk) into a deep bowl. You can save the liquid milk for another use or discard it.
    • Begin whipping cream with a high speed electric mixer.
    • Add powdered sugar and vanilla, continuing to whip until fluffy.
    • Use immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.
    • Store leftover whipped topping in refrigerator or the coconut cream will begin to melt at room temperature.

    🍓 FAQ's

Can I use any type of yogurt for this recipe?

Yes, you can choose your favorite vegan yogurt or yogurt alternative, such as almond-based, cashew-based, soy-based, or coconut-based yogurt.

Can I make this dessert ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the mousse ahead of time and store it in the freezer for a few hours. I recommend placing the mousse in a covered freezer container, then allow it to thaw in the refrigerator long enough to lightly soften (2-3 hours). Spoon it into bowls and serve immediately.

Is this dessert suitable for people with nut allergies?

It can be, depending on the specific brands of yogurt and non-dairy whipped topping you use. Some vegan yogurts and non-dairy whipped toppings contain nuts, so check the labels for allergen information. If allergies are a concern, choose nut-free alternatives.
