Let's Talk About Berries
What are berries?
We know that berries are amazing tiny powerhouses packed with nutrition, bright fantastic flavor and spectacular color - but what makes a berry - a berry? I like this simple description from an article about berries on Wikipedia:
"A berry is a small, pulpy, and often edible fruit. Typically, berries are juicy, rounded, brightly colored, sweet, sour or tart, and do not have a stone or pit, although many pips or seeds may be present."

Berry Varieties
Many berries are not only delicious on their own but also make amazing additions to both sweet and savory dishes. Common edible berries include:
- Strawberries
- Raspberries
- Blueberries
- Blackberries
- Boysenberries
- Cranberries
- Lingonberries
- Goji berries
- Açaí berries
- and whole lot more
These fruits are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber, making them a flavorful and nutritious choice in everything from salads and smoothies to sauces and baked goods.
⚠️ Foraging Tips
A word of caution - while many berries are edible, some wild berries can be toxic or even deadly if consumed. If you enjoy foraging, it's essential to positively identify any wild berries before eating them. Some poisonous varieties, such as nightshade berries or pokeweed berries, closely resemble edible types. When in doubt, consult a local expert, field guide, or foraging group to ensure your safety. Never eat a wild berry unless you are absolutely certain it is safe.

My Favorite Berries
The first several years of my childhood were spent in Santa Monica, California - less than an hour drive to Disneyland and the mecca of all things boysenberry - Knott's Berry Farm. Knott's famous boysenberry pie was a beloved dessert in our home growing up. Nothing was better than a warm slice of their pie, filled with sweet, tangy boysenberries baked in a flaky crust.
That early love of boysenberries stuck with me, and today I grow them in my San Diego backyard. There's nothing better than picking them fresh off the vine, still warm from the sun, and enjoying their rich, tart, juicy flavor just as nature intended.

🍓 Berries in the Recipes
My favorite berries for cooking, baking, and adding to dishes!
Strawberries
Sweet and slightly tart, strawberries peak in late spring to early summer. They're perfect for vegan shortcakes, pies, salads, smoothies, and jams. Pair them with dairy-free whipped cream or dip in dark chocolate for a classic plant-based treat.

Blueberries
Mildly sweet and tangy, blueberries ripen mid to late summer. Great in vegan muffins, pancakes, cobblers, and smoothies, they also hold their shape well in baking. Try them in breakfast bowls or simmered into sauces.

Raspberries
Bright and tart-sweet, raspberries are in season from late spring through early fall. They're ideal for vegan cakes, bars, chia jams, and lemony desserts. Their delicate texture makes them perfect for topping plant-based yogurt or granola.

Blackberries
Rich, sweet, and a little tart, blackberries peak mid-summer through early fall. They're great in vegan cobblers, crisps, smoothies, and jams. Their bold flavor also pairs well with chocolate or citrus in desserts.

Cranberries
Tart and firm, cranberries are harvested in fall and popular during the holidays. They're perfect for sauces, muffins, cookies, and granolas. Use fresh or dried in vegan recipes, from baked goods to savory stuffing and salads.

🫐🍓 Berry FAQ's
Can I use frozen berries in vegan baking & cooking?
Yes! Frozen berries work well in muffins, cakes, sauces, and smoothies. Don't thaw them first for baking - just fold them in gently to avoid excess bleeding.
How do I prevent berries from sinking in baked goods?
Toss berries in a little flour or cornstarch before adding them to batter. This helps suspend them evenly throughout cakes or muffins.
What's the best way to sweeten tart berries in vegan recipes?
Maple syrup, agave, or sugar are good options. A squeeze of lemon or orange juice can also balance the flavor without overpowering.
How long do fresh berries last, and how should I store them?
Most fresh berries last 3-7 days in the fridge. Store them dry in a breathable container lined with paper towels. Wash just before eating to prevent spoilage.
Can I use berries in savory vegan dishes?
Absolutely! Try adding berries to grain bowls, salads, or glazes for tofu and tempeh. Their bright, tart flavor pairs well with herbs, vinegar, and nuts.
What's a good plant-based substitute for whipped cream to pair with berries?
Coconut whipped cream, cashew cream, or aquafaba-based whip are all delicious vegan options for topping berry desserts.
